Last night we were able to go to my sister's house and finally meet baby Mykayla (now 5 days old!). We also loved seeing Aiden, Mykayla's older brother, who modeled his Elmo costume for us. He calls Elmo "tickle tickle." Aiden loved all the attention from his uncle Jonny and latched onto him for most of the night! Aiden is a good big brother to Mykayla.

New baby niece!
Introducting..................................My new niece, Mykayla! Isn't she cute? Look at all that hair!
My sister had her baby this morning. She is 8 lb 3oz and 21 inches. We can't go to the hospital because they aren't allowing visitors due to Swine Flu concerns, but all the reports are that everyone is doing well! They say she's a happy, peaceful baby. We are so excited to see her when she comes home!

Am I prepared?
This past week I had an interesting experience at school. Friday morning, I walked my students down to music class (taught by another 6th grade teacher), eagerly anticipating 40 minutes of "prep time." As I got to the door of his classroom, the teacher raced out and said, "I've had a family emergency. I need to go to the hospital. Do something for music."
It took me a few minutes to gather myself (I had the students listen to a story from www.storylineonline.net--love that site!), but I grabbed some copies of staff paper and started a lesson. By the end of the time, the students had learned some of the basics of reading music--the types of notes and the names of the notes. We had written rhythms and clapped them. Even though it was completely unprepared, I felt like it had been a successful lesson and would help the students when they started learning their instruments this year.
Later that weekend, when I finally had a quiet moment during stake conference, I reflected on that experience. It reminded me of the quotation by Thomas S. Monson, "When the time for performance arrives, the time for preparation is past." I thought back to the many hours, days, and even weeks I'd dedicated towards becoming a musician. My mind brought up memories of waking up early to practice before school, going to rehearsal after rehearsal, and the money my parents had invested in lessons. My hard work (and the dedication of so many teachers through the years) had brought me to this point, where on the spur of the moment I could teach basic music skills.
Then my thoughts wandered to the spiritual side of this lesson: If I was called upon spiritually without notice (a new calling, a friend in crisis, a new challenge in life....even death), would I be able to say that I felt somewhat prepared? Have I spent the time and dedication "practicing" and developing--reading my scriptures, praying, attending the temple, serving others? This was a humbling thought. I'm grateful that the atonement allows us to improve, because I certainly know I can. In my hectic day, I want to make sure I'm putting in the time so that, line upon line, when the moment arrives, I can feel more prepared. It can't happen all at once. It takes daily devotion. Now is the time...
P.S. I've also gotten the opportunity to work with a small group of flute players at school. It is so fun! I'm grateful for these chances to share my enjoyment of music. This week I'm teaching music again, but I'm prepared this time!

Spring Break
Well, Spring Break has finally rolled around (I LOVE year round school) and I'm finally getting to update the blog. Life is so fun! I love spending time with my husband and our wonderful families. Last week Jonny and I got to go to Costa Rica (thanks for the connections, family!) and we had an awesome time!! We got to zipline through the forest, slide down a 1600 foot river waterslide, ride horses to mudpools and hot springs. We also had a great time snorkeling in the ocean (aside from Jonny getting stung by jellyfish on his first time ever in the ocean) and saw some cool puffer fish and moray eels.
We learned an important lesson about diving with dive boots on....watch out for the sock tan sunburn!!
This weekend I was able to attend my mission reunion in Provo. It was wonderful to be reunited with friends and our mission president and his family. Saturday I drove to Ogden to hang out with my family and adorable nephew Aiden while we watched Saturday's sessions of General Conference. We also got to attend the Sunday session of General Conference. Such a neat experience! I love listening to the inspired messages.
Speaking of inspired messages, I recently discovered Mormon Messages on You Tube. Visit www.youtube.com/MormonMessages to view official videos from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I love one from President Uchtdorf called Create.
Recently, I've started reading the Book of Mormon from the beginning again. I got new scriptures for Christmas and I'm noticing that having unmarked scriptures is helping me to recognize some new insights. I'm so grateful for our scriptures! There is nothing else that can make a day improve faster than feeling the Spirit and the scriptures are a great way to do it!
Some thoughts on 1 Nephi 10:
I admire so much those righteous people who lived before Christ had come but had such faith that he would and lived accordingly. I guess faith is faith either way--we have faith that he came and did what he said, despite critics and unbelievers, and we also have faith that he will come again (and be ready!) They knew about when he would come and had signs to recognize him when he came. We don't know when he'll return but we do have signs to recognize that he will!
My favorite part from this chapter, though, is part of verse 17. After Nephi listened to the revelation his father had received, he writes, "I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost..." I think that's admirable that Nephi didn't just believe his father but desired his own spiritual experiences. I am so grateful that the Lord gives us each the opportunity to receive revelation and confirmation through the Holy Ghost, (finishing verse 17) "which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men."
Nephi understood that receiving personal revelation through the Holy Ghost was important for them (before Christ had come), but that it would also be important for those who lived on the Earth during his ministry and after (like us!). God has not left us alone, nor does he only allow his Spirit to communicate with a few chosen people. He loves all his children and will allow his Spirit to be with all those "who diligently seek him." So, the question I ask myself is, "Am I diligently seeking him?" If yes, then I have probably had recent spiritual experiences where I have seen the Lord's hand in my life, felt his love, and received direction. If no, then I know what I need to do to have these gifts!

It's been forever!
It has been WAY too long since I've written on my blog. I have lots of pictures of my bridals, wedding, and reception posted on Facebook (so become my Facebook friend!).
It has been so long that I am not even going to think about trying to catch up with life, but I will just say that I have a wonderful husband and I am very happy we got married.
I've been thinking a lot about putting priorities first. So...even though I have a massive to do list, I need to study my scriptures!
I wanted to look up some of my favorite scriptures on charity.
1 Corinthians 8:1- "Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth." The footnote for edifieth says "buildeth up." I like building in contrast to puffing. Building seems much more lasting, and much more unifying. A question to ask myself, "Am I puffing myself up or building us up?" Charity is not about me.
1 Corinthians 13- This is the phenomenal chapter that could be many days study just by itself. I like verse 5, "seeketh not her own." The footnote to that is, obviously, selfishness. This is a hard concept for me at times, especially as life changes. Is there a point when you need to be selfish to take care of yourself? Is that being selfish? I am always amazed when I meet people who "seek not her (or his) own" and are so concerned about people around them. I'd love to be more like that (while not neglecting what Heavenly Father has given me...). It is complicated, for sure.
Verse 7 always lifts me as it reminds me that charity "beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things." That verse makes me think about so many people who have suffered and endured so much and still have charity (of course, the Savior is the ultimate example of that. He is Perfect in His Charity).
1 Peter 4:8- Peter teaches, right after a chapter about marriage and redemption and brotherhood, that "above things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover a multitude of sins." I'm sure we would be much slower to judge and much quicker to forgive if we have charity. I'm sure other people's charity has covered my multitude of sins many times!
2 Nephi 26:30- "and except they have charity they were nothing." Wow...that pretty much says it all. What was important that I did today? Did I have charity? If not, then not of it was very important after all.
Moroni 7:47- "But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him." And the next verse teaches us how to get charity- by praying to the Father to be filled with that Love. That's how we can know if we are true followers of Christ...if we have Charity. And Charity is what makes us like him. Someday I hope I can get there....
Moroni 10:21 To continue that thought, "and except ye have charity ye can in nowise be saved in the kingdom of God..."
So I guess I better get there!
and finally, click for a great Visiting Teaching Message about Charity.
and there are many, many more, but that's as far as I'll get tonight.
